OWINGS MILLS, Md. (AP) ? Joe Flacco understands the lofty expectations that come with a Super Bowl ring and a new $120.1 million contract.

He couldn't care less.

The Baltimore Ravens quarterback scoffed at the idea that he is under pressure to excel this season, now that he's the reigning Super Bowl MVP and owns a six-year contract that, at the time, was the richest in NFL history.

"All we can do is go out there and keep winning, just like we have every year we've been here and not really worry about what people say and what the expectations are," Flacco said Tuesday. "Who really cares?"

After throwing 11 touchdown passes without an interception in a sensational playoff run that ended with a 34-31 win over San Francisco, Flacco no longer has to prove he is one of the league's elite players. He's the only quarterback in NFL history to win a playoff game in each of his first five seasons, and now he's got the fame ? and a paycheck ? worthy of such an accomplishment.

"I can't really complain at this point. We won last year, I have a lot of money ? or I'm going to get a lot of money ? and we're going to win football games. That's the way it is around here," Flacco said a brief training camp practice with rookies and injured veterans. "We're not going to apologize for acting like a good football team. Yeah, our expectations are high, and we don't care if that comes with pressure. We expect to win."

As he prepares to enter his sixth NFL season, Flacco has already won nine playoff games, taken the Ravens to the AFC title game three times and has never missed a start. What else can the guy do?

There is no limit to his potential, according to Ravens coach John Harbaugh.

"He continues to grow," Harbaugh said. "The contract really doesn't have much to do with how hard you work, as long as you continue to work, which he will and has."

Flacco's sheepish grin and will to win hasn't changed since he arrived as a first-round pick out of Delaware in 2008. Now, however, he exudes the confidence of a champion. Continued...

And with linebacker Ray Lewis retired, Flacco will be asked to do more than merely guide the offense. At times, he will be required to be the voice of the team ? in and out of the locker room.

It's nothing he hasn't done before.

"I'm always a leader. I'm not going to really change my role," he said. "We don't have Ray Lewis here anymore, if that's what you're asking. Me and him are probably different in terms of how we lead anyway. I'm not going to change what I do at all because I make more money. That has nothing to do with leading a football team.

"I'm going to go out there and play well and lead by example and I'm going to have fun with my guys. I'm going to get them to trust me and we're going to be a good football team because of it."

During a whirlwind offseason that began immediately after the Super Bowl, the Ravens retooled much of their defense, traded standout wide receiver Anquan Boldin, dumped fullback Vonta Leach and lost center Matt Birk to retirement.

But general manager Ozzie Newsome made signing Flacco a priority, and now Harbaugh has his quarterback in place for another six years.

"It's a great thing to have your quarterback. It's very important, it's a big advantage," the coach said. "Every team in the league is chasing that."

Better still, Harbaugh knows he can count of the durable Flacco to be ready for every start. From his first game as a rookie through his first Super Bowl experience, Flacco has taken the first snap of every game and stuck around until his services were no longer required.

"I don't think it's the end all be all, but I'm definitely proud to say that I can be there for my team every Sunday," Flacco said. "It's not about being hurt, not being hurt. As a player and as a quarterback, there really is only one of you every Sunday and you just take pride in the fact that you can show up for your teammates every week. I think that definitely helps out a lot in terms of being a leader on the team. All of the guys know the fact that you're going to be out there for them."

Utah kids savvy on Facebook and Angry Birds, but their computer coding skills don?t fly

(Steve Griffin | The Salt Lake Tribune) Gordon Moses of Pleasant Grove High, Linda Brown of Desert Hills High in St. George, and Shawn Caine, of Panguitch High sort candy during a June workshop at Westminster College in Salt Lake City. Some groups grouped candy by taste, others by brand or other considerations.

Utah kids savvy on Facebook and Angry Birds, but their computer coding skills don?t fly

On a summer Friday, Zane Williams and a group of friends hit a glitch as they tried to make a computer sing ? it wouldn?t play flats.

Once the teens realized their program could only read sharps, they tweaked the sheet music it was scanning. Their speaker blipped out a short melody at a computer coding summer camp at the University of Utah.

?

Which states want student coders?

States are focused on teaching students how to use computers rather than explaining concepts of computer science that lead to innovation and further study, according to the Association for Computing Machinery and the Computer Science Teachers Association.

As of 2010, 14 states had adopted standards that included significant computer science instruction, the groups said in their report, ?Running On Empty: The Failure to Teach K-12 Computer Science in the Digital Age.?

Nine states counted computer science toward high school math or science graduation requirements, including Oregon, Texas and New York.

The report ranked Utah among the lowest states for teaching concepts recommended by the National Academy of Science and its partners.

Nationally, computer programmers make about $78,000 a year, a 2012 U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics report shows. In Utah, that salary is about $73,000.

?

Pitching programming

Think of it this way, experts say: using computer programs or apps on devices is an elementary skill, like making small talk. Understanding the logic that goes into computer programming is like learning to read. Students also need to learn to write ? or how to tell computers what to do through programming.

?We teach our kids to read, but not everybody?s going to write a book,? said Lynn Langit, a California programmer who runs the nonprofit Teaching Kids Programming and leads workshops in Utah. Schools should ?teach our kids to program,? she said, ?even though not everybody?s going to be a programmer.?

"I?ve never done anything like this in school," said Williams, a rising sophomore at Brighton High School. "Programming?s becoming a bigger part in jobs and careers. Even if you?re not a programmer, you probably need to know a little bit."

Utah expects far less of its high school graduates ? asking them only to show they have the office skills to create a document, build spreadsheets and organize files.

But the state Board of Education realizes it?s time for an upgrade.

This summer, a task force is debating how fluent Utah students should be in computer science to graduate. Their report is expected this fall.

Today?s jobs demand a higher level of computer literacy, critical educators, executives and parents contend, urging Utah schools to boost students? exposure to coding and programming.

"Just because a student can surf on the Web ? and play on Facebook and play video games ? does not mean they?re computer literate," said Cody Henrichsen, a computer science teacher at Canyons School District.

And such literacy is "not so elective in today?s economy," said Helen Hu, a Westminster College professor of computer science serving on the task force.

One possibility is sprinkling more computer science into core classes, such as math, said Sydnee Dickson, director of teaching and learning for the state Office of Education.

story continues below

With rapid changes in technology, it?s challenging for schools to write curriculum and train teachers fast enough.

Teaching coding also requires wider Internet access than most Utah schools now have, and more student access to school servers than most districts now grant, said Carl Lyman, a technology education specialist at the state education office.

Utah lawmakers? $10 million push for science, technology, engineering and math, or STEM education, doesn?t immediately include any computer science initiatives, said Jeffrey Nelson, chairman of the Utah STEM center and CEO of Nelson Labs.

But a background in basic coding and robotics is a "big need" in today?s medical jobs, he said. "We?re hungry for people with these skills."

?

Start young ? Eight-year-old Jake Dawley dragged green ovals and orange circles across a PC screen at the U.?s summer computer and robotics camp. Guided by his programming, a Lego robot spun in circles and could sense when it was coming up against a wall.

"It?s cool," Dawley said, "because it?s interesting that your robot will listen to something you do on the computer."

Advocates say students should learn the ABCs of computer science early ? with puzzles, logic and team problem solving ? because children familiar with technology are more likely to pursue such careers later.

Schools can also break down what experts say are widespread misconceptions: that the discipline is only for nerds, or even just men.

Waiting until high school can be too late, said Microsoft engineers David Jackman and Larry Fluckiger, who teach Advanced Placement and elective classes in the Alpine School District.

Among high school students, "we get this stigma that it?s really hard," Jackman said. The feeling is, "that?s not really my thing. It?s going to be too hard to do."

If Netflix Can Continue To Make Awesome Original Series It Should Be Able To Satisfy Wall Street's Thirst For More Subscribers

Cast members from Netflix's original show "Orange is the New Black"

Yesterday Netflix's earnings report was directly in line with what analyst projected, but the internet streaming service's stock price still dropped about 7% in after-hours trading.

Analysts and investors are concerned with how Netflix plans to increase its subscriber base.

Netflix CEO Reed Hastings and CFO ?David Wells held a webcast yesterday in lieu of the traditional earnings call. The two explained that the company is investing in original series as a way to boost subscribers.? Netflix calculates the cost of producing a show as an investment instead of an expenditure.

There was a "small but noticeable" member bump from "Arrested Development" but the bump didn't help Netflix reach the 900,000 new subscribers Wall Street was hoping for.? Netflix added 630,000 subscribers in the U.S. during the second quarter bringing the total to 29.81 million U.S. subscribers.?

Morgan Stanley's Scott Devitt and John Egbert believe that Netflix's original series are "yielding tangible benefits to member singups and churn."

While Netflix wouldn't reveal actual viewership numbers for its original series it did note that it has renewed all of its series for a second season. Hastings emphasized the importance of the company renewing its original series as, "a very positive sign".?

Netflix also pointed out that it will produce original documentaries and stand-up comedy specials as a way to attract new members.

The company's newest series, "Orange Is The New Black" is doing better than Emmy-nominated, "House of Cards" and all other shows the company has released.

Each original series is doing better than the last which you could argue is a good thing. As long as Netflix can continue to demonstrate to investors and Wall Street that it is scaling quickly and effectively it will continue to perform well.

Top 7 Article Writting Tips For Dummies - Digit Crunch

Guest Post: Our Host?Roger Pahuriray, Roger is going to guide you with several writing tips which is extremely helpful for your career. See How To Become An Author At Digit Crunch.

A spanking new trend on web design doesn?t just focus on web design. For a website to work, don?t rely too much on the packaging: the chunk of it depends on plain old content. Writing great web content comes with great responsibility! It ensures not just single visits from the curious, but a loyal following as well.

1. Learn the lingo

You can?t sell, say, wrestling gear without pumping up words with adrenaline. Otherwise the articles you write won?t stand out in the boxing ring. Since wrestling is all about packing verbs with adrenaline, in the same manner, cosmetic or beauty products are all about grace and elegance. Each topic has its each personality, as each word has its own sound. It takes years to develop this, but writers shouldn?t be discouraged: all it takes is reading. A lot of it! During commutes, while cooking your breakfast, or even when you?re just taking a coffee break, read up on similar topics.

2. Be cool and casual

Most articles are effective not because they use highfalutin words, but because they have a smooth, casual register. It?s figurative, catchy and conversational. This is the to-die-for element the ideal web content writer has. Ditch the semicolons and trim the sentences. If you can?t read it in real life, it?s not going to work on the web.

3. Read and take notes

Be versatile! Exploring the web will help you learn about other product?s dialects. Immerse yourself not just by reading articles but also by taking note (use mobile devices) of the overall tone and writing style, down to the gritty details of adjectives, verbs, and sentence construction. Short sentences deliver fast-paced action, while longer sentences mean elaboration.

4. Trick yourself

The last thing you would want to know is how you?re faring well with your article. Monitoring your word count every few seconds would surely discourage you. Amuse yourself! Dare yourself by using a new word for each article. Through time you will incorporate that, and the next time you?d use it, you would sound like a natural. Write in the great outdoors!

5. Skip the first few sentences

It really depends on your writing habits, but personally, the first few sentences are the most time-consuming part of an article. Try writing the second sentence or the next few paragraphs first. Prioritize ideas first! Organize them later. If you can write as fast as how your mind thinks, then please help yourself and do it!

6. Edit, edit and edit

Editing your work is the best way to steer clear from misspellings or glaring grammatical errors. Editing shouldn?t be done as soon as you?ve finished your work?let your mind rest for a while. Sometimes you have to forget what you?ve written: after thirty minutes, read your work as if you haven?t written it. You will have fresh and transparent opinions on your piece.

7. The rule on writing titles

If you?re the person who writes his ideas first before organizing them, then the title is of the least priority. As soon as you?ve settled down the order of your paragraphs, and edited your piece thoroughly, the title will easily come to you. But if all else fails, go to a trusted web design agency to help you with your content. It?s not the cheapest option but it?s easily one of the easiest, to make sure that you have stellar content every time. ? Russia's overlap of law and politics

MOSCOW (AP) ? In the minutes after opposition leader Alexei Navalny was sentenced to prison, the Russian stock market took a dive. When a court released him a day later, share prices dropped markedly again.

Russia's legal system is awash in the uncertainty that makes markets nervous. The courts appear open to political manipulation and the laws sometimes resemble legalistic head-fakes ? nominally enacted for enlightened reasons, but in practice applied to silencing dissent and inconvenient voices.

A look at some cases of the uneasy intersection of law and politics:

NAVALNY

The merits of the embezzlement case against the energetic anti-corruption blogger and charismatic opposition figure were widely questioned and his conviction on Thursday was quickly criticized in the West as a political put-up job. Ironically, it was his release that seemed to be the clearest evidence of a political agenda.

The release was justified by the court on the grounds that keeping Navalny behind bars would deprive him of the right to pursue his campaign for this fall's Moscow mayoral election. By giving him at least temporary freedom Russia could bolster its claim that it does actually seek pluralism and full democracy, despite allegations that it's deliberately moving to authoritarianism.

Russian lawyers were suspicious, saying the release of Navalny on these grounds ? and at the request of prosecutors ? was unprecedented. Pavel Chikov, a lawyer who's a member of the presidential human rights council, went so far as to call it "nonsense."

"Most probably, this decision was dictated by political motives," he told the state news agency RIA Novosti.

PUSSY RIOT

Russia has laws promoting religious tolerance. Members of the country's most politically vehement punk band ended up in prison because of one.

Just before the 2012 election that returned Vladimir Putin to the Kremlin, the band barged into Moscow's main Orthodox cathedral to screech out a "punk prayer" against him.

The Russian Orthodox Church is so closely tied to the government that offending believers in essence becomes a political act. So the conviction of three band members on charges of hooliganism motivated by religious hatred superficially defended the sensitivities of the devout, but had a strong political taint. They were sentenced to two years in prison, though one has been released on parole.

GAY PRIDE

Homosexuality was decriminalized in Russia in 1993, but gay activists' annual requests to hold marches routinely are banned on the grounds of public security. The argument is that animosity toward gays, especially among conservative Orthodox groups, remains so strong that any such march would provoke a violent reaction. When unauthorized march attempts take place, thugs do indeed start throwing punches within moments ? but police appear more concerned about arresting the activists than holding back the attackers.

That may change, and not in gays' favor. The lower house of the national parliament has passed a measure calling for banning gay pride rallies outright.

ADOPTIONS

In banning the adoption of Russian children by Americans last year, Russian lawmakers claimed they were protecting beloved tykes from abuse and death at the hands of adoptive parents whom U.S. authorities are too apathetic or disorganized to bring to justice. But the warmhearted concern came amid cold political fury.

The ban was part of a measure rushed through parliament in retaliation for a U.S. law allowing sanctions on Russians identified as human rights violators. Distress about the adoption ban overshadowed the more overtly political provisions of the Russian law, which also calls for the closure of non-governmental organizations receiving American funding, if their activities are classified as political.

WWII

It was seven decades ago that Nazi Germany fell to an offensive driven largely by the Red Army, but the war is still alive in Russia's official culture. Massive annual commemorations of the victory ? and periodic equally elaborate observances of major battles such as Stalingrad ? allow Russians to bathe in the pride of a great and grueling achievement.

Awkwardly, though, the commander-in-chief was one of history's most despised dictators, Josef Stalin. In the Putin years, Russia has significantly blurred that distinction to the point that referring to the Soviet army's brutality and its seizure of the Baltic states is seen as an insult to the modern state.

A bill making its way through parliament would criminalize criticism of Soviet actions during the war. In theory, that would defend the honor of those who sacrificed and suffered. In practice, it could protect those who rule in the present.

U.N. chief praises Panama on North Korea, urges swift U.N. action

UNITED NATIONS (Reuters) - U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon praised Panama on Wednesday for seizing a North Korean ship carrying arms from Cuba, adding that the U.N. sanctions committee would take up the issue promptly.

"The Secretary-General commends the action taken by Panama in full conformity with its obligations under the relevant Security Council resolutions," Ban's press office said in a statement.

It added that Ban, a former South Korean foreign minister, "notes that it is the duty of all member states to implement Security Council decisions.

"The Secretary-General awaits the outcome of the investigation into the matter in question and is sure the (North Korea) Security Council Sanctions Committee will promptly address it," the statement said.

North Korea is under U.N. sanctions for its repeated nuclear and ballistic missile tests.

Ban's unusual praise for a country complying with U.N. sanctions came after Panama called on the Security Council to investigate the ship and its cargo.

Earlier on Wednesday Britain's U.N. Ambassador Mark Lyall Grant said missile equipment hidden in a shipment of brown sugar from Cuba appears to have violated a U.N. arms embargo on Pyongyang.

The ship was stopped last week as it headed into the Panama Canal and Panamanian authorities arrested the crew on Monday after finding undeclared missile-shaped objects and weaponry.

Cuba said the weapons were being sent back to North Korea for repair and included two anti-aircraft missile batteries, nine disassembled rockets, two MiG-21 fighter jets, and 15 MiG-21 engines, all Soviet-era military weaponry built in the middle of the last century.

The U.N. arms embargo on North Korea covers all exports by Pyongyang and most imports, with the exception of small arms and light weapons and related materiel. But to export small arms to Pyongyang, states must notify the U.N. North Korean sanctions committee in advance.

Service and maintenance of weapons by North Korea are also banned under the U.N. sanctions regime.

Apple hires fresh talent for ?iWatch?

Apple has embarked on a hiring spree to tackle design problems with its "iWatch" wrist computer, bringing in fresh expertise amid concern that the launch of its first new product since the death of Steve Jobs could be at least a year away.

The company has begun hiring "aggressively" for the project in recent weeks, say people familiar with Apple's plans for the wearable device, a move that shows it has stepped up development but which raises questions over the ability of its own engineers to develop wearable technology.

As Apple moves from iPods, iPhones and iPads into an entirely new category of product, it is looking beyond its existing staff in Cupertino for the talent required to build it ? an indication that the endeavor involves "hard engineering problems that they've not been able to solve", according to one source.

(Read More: This Could Threaten Apple's iPhone)

Tim Cook, Apple's chief executive, could still decide not to launch the product, just as past ideas have been scrapped, these people said. However, the iWatch ? a brand for which Apple has made several applications to trademark ? has now progressed from an exploratory phase to having several dozen employees dedicated to its development.

Group from Ohio taking free portraits of tornado survivors

A group of seven missionaries is in Tuscaloosa in hopes to have an impact on tornado survivors.

The team from Ohio is offering free senior and family portraits to those impacted by the deadly tornado that ripped through Alabama on April 27, 2011. The majority of damage done in Tuscaloosa was to homes.

A picture is worth a thousand words. Missionary photographer Helen Anne Swartwout said, "Even just family portraits tell, shows you this was a time in our lives. This was what Aunt Marge looked like and this was what, do you remember how small Timmy was. And it tells a story."

The group from Ohio realizes they can't replace what some lost, but by offering free portraits it gives survivors a new starting point.

Tornado survivor Rust Vitt got choked up when he said, "Yeah, it's moving forward but, unless you drive into the neighborhood every night and you still see remnants of that. Umm.. I'm sorry."

The emotion of what survivors went through is what motivated group leader Holli Stevenson to come back to Tuscaloosa.

"When I got here two years ago there were people working alongside of us who had lost everything. They lost their homes and they were helping us dig through rubble looking for survivors. They didn't wait to be rescued," Stevenson added.

But what the team has been waiting on is to touch the lives of the people that lived through the tornado.

Tornado survivor Muriell Vitt said, "I think that is a blessing. Such a giving heart that they would want to do that for people. I mean I'm just awestruck." That awestruck feeling is what the missionaries are hoping to take back home with them.

The photography group will be at Wings of Grace Relief Center in Tuscaloosa Friday also.

Mexico surpasses US in obesity

Mexicans have apparently been abandoning their fibre-rich traditional diet for processed snack foods and drinks

Mexico has surpassed the US in levels of adult obesity, a dubious distinction that experts attribute to Mexicans abandoning their traditional diet for processed snack foods and drinks.

'; document.write(s); return; } window.google_adnum = window.google_adnum || null; google_ad_client = "ca-pub-9024837700129787"; google_ad_output = "js"; google_ad_type = "text"; google_ad_channel = '9868211012,3764294476'; google_max_num_ads = '2'; google_skip = window.google_adnum; /* insert this snippet for each ad call */

Almost one-third of adult Mexicans, 32.8%, are obese compared to 31.8% of Americans, according to the UN Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO). Both trail such countries as Egypt, which clocks in at 34.6%, Kuwait (42.8%), and the Micronesian island of Nauru at 71.1%.

Experts say the root of the problem in Mexico is changing dietary patterns.

"One factor is that Mexicans consume more soft drinks per person than any other country. That's a lot of sugar," said Katia Garcia, a nutritionist and researcher for the Power of the Consumer group.

"People have been abandoning the traditional diet, tortillas, beans and chilli, which are rich in fibre and vitamins. "

The FAO's The State of Food and Agriculture report defines people over 20 years of age with a body mass index of 30 or more as obese.

Besides Egypt, Kuwait and Nauru, a number of island nations like Samoa and Tonga also top Mexico, having more than half their populations listed as obese. Bahamas and Barbados are in the mid-thirties range.

Still, Mexico's obesity has caused serious concern among activists, especially given the fact that Mexico is still fighting malnutrition. Large numbers of children in Mexico's poor, rural villages remain underweight.

"Malnutrition is a paradoxical situation," said Carlos Labastida, of the general secretariat of Mexico's National Autonomous University.

"In some regions of our country, we haven't overcome the problems of a lack of calories and malnutrition, while on the other hand we have to face a huge problem, which in my opinion is even bigger than malnutrition, which is obesity and being overweight."

HTC Butterfly being upgraded to Android 4.2 and Sense 5

Droid DNA / Butterfly

Taiwanese devices have an update to the latest software waiting

Big news for HTC Butterfly owners this morning, as Engadget brings news that the Taiwanese version of the device is receiving an update to Android 4.2.2 and HTC Sense 5. That brings the Butterfly in line with the HTC One, which shipped with Sense 5 and started to see its own Android 4.2 update in recent days. It's a big update for the Butterfly, which has been on the older Sense 4+ since it launched late last year. While Engadget reports that not all of the HTC One's user experience has made it across, the core software — including the BlinkFeed home screen reader — is in place.

Butterfly owners in Taiwan can expect an small, initial update to prep the phone, followed by a larger OTA containing the new firmware. No word yet on when the latest update will be hitting the U.S. version of the Butterfly, Verizon's Droid DNA — fingers crossed for a speedy turnaround on that one.

(AP) ? Gov. Rick Perry was a champion of fiercely conservative social activism long before the tea party was born. He oversaw the "Texas Miracle" job-creation boom and became the state's most powerful governor since Reconstruction.

But nationally, Perry is better known for his 'oops' presidential debate brain freeze or for not opposing forcefully enough the notion that Texas could secede from the union. For many outside the Lone Star State, he's a political punchline on par with Dan Quayle ? if he's known at all.

Now, the longest-serving governor in Texas history is quitting his day job. Perry announced Monday that he won't seek a fourth full term in office next year, but notably didn't say whether another run for the White House in 2016 could be next.

"The time has come to pass on the mantle of leadership. Today I'm announcing I will not seek re-election as governor of Texas," Perry said Monday. "I will spend the next 18 months working to create more jobs, opportunity and innovation. I will actively lead this great state. And I'll also pray and reflect and work to determine my own future."

But for that future to include another run for president, Perry will first need to concentrate on rebuilding his tattered image outside of Texas.

"He's starting behind the eight ball," said South Carolina-based Republican operative Hogan Gidley, an adviser to former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum and ex-Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee ? both unsuccessful presidential hopefuls who have remained national conservative forces.

Perry had never lost an election during his 27-year political career when he strapped on his signature cowboy boots and strode into the race for the GOP presidential nomination in August 2011, becoming a near-instant front-runner.

But his White House run flamed out spectacularly, culminating in a debate in Michigan where Perry remembered that he'd pledged to shutter the U.S. Departments of Commerce and Education but forgot the third one, the Department of Energy. Quipped late-night comedian Jimmy Fallon: "It turns out George Bush was actually the smart Texas governor."

It wasn't the first time Perry's mouth had gotten him into trouble. Ending a television interview in 2005, Perry smirked at the camera and signed off: "Adios, mofo."

Those incidents, however, did little to lessen Perry's influence in Texas, where he is considered the most powerful governor since the Civil War.

Perry, who took office when then-Gov. George W. Bush left for the White House in December 2000, set the tone for his tenure the following June ? vetoing more than 80 bills in what became known in Austin as the "Father's Day Massacre." Since then, he's vetoed scores of other would-be laws, including a $35 billion public education budget and a ban on executing mentally disabled inmates.

But most of Perry's power has come from his sheer longevity. He remained in office long enough to tap loyalists ? sometimes even his top donors ? to every major appointed post statewide.

"He's made the state into his personal fiefdom," said Matt Glazer, a Democratic consultant.

Still, Gidley and others note Perry has been successful at appearing regularly on national television, attracting a great deal of media attention in his recent job-poaching tours of California, Illinois and New York.

Perry also still has his TV anchorman good looks ? he's often dubbed "Governor Good Hair." He has been a ferocious fundraiser buoyed by both grassroots activists and mainstream Republicans while presiding over a flourishing Texas economy.

The governor said Monday he is "looking forward to the next 18 months as I serve out my term. Any future considerations I will announce in due time and I will arrive at that decision appropriately. But my focus will remain on Texas."

Longtime staffer and former presidential campaign spokesman Ray Sullivan attended Monday's event and said afterward that Perry would have more opportunity to prepare for a presidential run.

"Without the pressure of another campaign, a governor's campaign and without the pressure of another legislative session, there's a lot more opportunity to make those trips, to have those opportunities," he said.

Sullivan said of Perry's legacy: "He has held the line on government. He has created an economic engine that is the envy of the nation and has really stuck to his conservative principles and been successful doing so."

Perry's decision opens up the field to a wide swath of gubernatorial contenders. Texas Attorney General Greg Abbott is expected to seek the governorship and becomes the immediate front-runner. Spokesman Matt Hirsch said Monday that Abbott will announce his plans soon, and Abbott has said he plans to travel to many cities across the state.

Perry has been a leading voice on many social issues conservatives hold dear, including states' rights, relaxed environmental regulations, strict abortion limits and opposition to gay marriage.

An Eagle Scout, Perry urged the Boy Scouts not to accept openly gay youngsters. And the avid defender of gun rights once produced a laser-sighted pistol from his running shorts and shot a coyote while jogging in rural Austin.

Over the past decade, Texas has created a third of the net new jobs nationwide, though critics note Texas has a disproportionate percentage of hourly workers earning minimum wage or even less, according to federal employment data.

Perry also credits the state's relaxed regulatory climate and limits on civil lawsuits for job creation, though some have pointed to the consequences of little oversight, noting the West fertilizer plant explosion in April that killed 15 people was lightly regulated and even firefighters were unaware of the highly combustible chemicals inside.

Perry detractors also note that the governor opposes expanding Medicaid coverage in Texas ? a centerpiece of the White House's health care reform ? even though Texas has the highest rate of uninsured residents in the country.

Perry first won a seat in the Texas Legislature as a Democrat in 1984, when Texas was still reliably blue. As the state turned deeply red, Perry shifted too. Democrats have not captured a statewide office in nearly 20 years.

The opposition party insists, though, that a booming Hispanic population means it's only a matter of time before Texas switches back ? a notion Perry has dismissed as a "pipe dream."

It didn't look so far-fetched last week, however, when Democratic state Sen. Wendy Davis was on her feet for 12-plus hours as Democrats used the filibuster to help block sweeping new restrictions on abortion in Texas. She became a national political sensation, prompting many supporters to urge her to run for governor.

Perry's response was swift, immediately calling lawmakers back for an extra special session. He said he was confident they'd approve the law in record time.
