Design manager (ref: DM/Nov2012)

Job summary and mission:

Based in Hong Kong, this role contributes to Starbucks success by creating outstanding store designs for the Asia Pacific markets which uphold the Starbucks customer experience, meet brand design expectations, cost, schedule and operational requirements. The design manager would work in collaboration with cross functional teams in accordance with Starbucks guiding principles.

Summary of key responsibilities:

Responsibilities and essential job functions include but are not limited to the following:

Store design ? design of stores in response to site context, local requirements and market criteria in alignment with global?design strategy.

  • creates store design concept through schematic planning, interior and architectural design, detailing, materials?specifications and scheduling
  • designs store environments that achieve brand quality standards, meets individual store budgets and market?requirements in alignment with construction and real estate teams
  • manages the production of construction documents by designers and consultants

Planning and execution ? developing strategic and operational plans for the design team, managing execution and measuring results:

  • ensures all new stores and renovations meet the established design quality expectations including brand relevance, new concepts, aesthetics, innovations and local relevance while protecting the brand
  • executes store designs in collaboration with cross functional teams to optimise materials and furniture inventory?levels, elevate brand awareness, achieve fiscal goals and uphold corporate and global responsibilities
  • works with market business units to ensure that design team processes, practices and programs are aligned with?company business goals and objectives. Sets schedules in partnership with construction and real estate

Team leadership ? setting goals for the design team, developing team capabilities, and contributing to team?cohesiveness:

  • provides clear, effective and timely communication of design direction and changes
  • identifies exceptions, proposes?design solutions and resolves issues
  • identifies and communicates key responsibilities and practices to direct reports and external consultants, promotes a?successful attitude, confidence in leadership and teamwork to achieve business results

Partner development and team building ? providing partners with coaching, feedback, and developmental opportunities?and building effective teams:

  • challenges and inspires partners and consultants to achieve business results
  • ensures partners adhere to legal and operational compliance requirements
  • provides coaching, direction and leadership support to team members in order to achieve partner, business and?customer results

Business requirements ? providing functional expertise and executing functional responsibilities:

  • gains alignment with regional market teams on market specific design directions and incorporates strategies into individual store designs
  • manages the architectural design process by assessing the scope of the project through review of surveys and deal documents

Summary of experience

  • a minimum of seven years? experience in interior and architectural design in retail, hospitality or restaurant design and/or experience with international development organisations
  • solid experience leading the design team and provide guidance and direction
  • experience in creation, management and delivery of design and construction documents
  • experience to manage and coordinate with external consultants, including architectural, interior and others
  • ability to create innovative store environments by interpreting design objectives
  • demonstrated understanding of industry trends, building and health codes?
  • demonstrated application of color, materials and design principles and good 3D visualisation skills
  • knowledge of current sustainability trends and practices preferred
  • ability to execute multiple designs under tight deadlines
  • excellent command, clearly and concisely in English and proficient in Chinese, both orally and in writing
  • demonstrated ability to communicate design vision in visual, written, and verbal formats
  • knowledge of architectural details and specifications for construction document production
  • candidate with more experience will be considered as senior manager position
