Bayer Q2 profits jump on new drugs, lower charges

FRANKFURT, Germany (AP) ? German drug and chemicals company Bayer AG says net profit rose 75 percent in the second quarter thanks to lower one-time charges and strong sales of new products including anti-clotting drug Xarelto and cancer drug Stivarga.

But falling earnings at its high-tech materials division led the company to say it would be harder to achieve its earnings goals for the year.

Net profit came in at 841 million euros ($1.1 billion), up from 481 million euros a year ago when the company had 611 million euros in one-time charges, mostly for U.S. lawsuits over its birth-control pill. Revenues rose 1.9 percent to 10.36 billion euros.

The company, which is based in Leverkusen, Germany, said Wednesday it also saw increased sales in its pharmaceuticals division thanks to better-than-expected performance from its new products. Top performers were Xarelto, which is used to prevent dangerous blood clots in people having hip or knee replacement; Eylea, which treats the aging-related eye disease macular degeneration, and cancer drug Stivarga. Pharmaceutical sales rose 5.5 percent to 2.83 billion euros.

The company's farm business saw operating earnings, which exclude some financial items, rise 14 percent thanks to continuing high prices for agricultural commodities. The division makes seeds as well as compounds used to kill weeds, bugs and fungus.

However, Bayer recorded lower earnings at its materials business due to lower demand and prices in Asia and Europe. Operating earnings for the division, which makes things like high-tech polycarbonate plastics, fell 28.5 percent.

CEO Marijn Dekkers said the company was sticking with its outlook for the year but said that reaching it appeared "increasingly ambitious" because of the slowdown at the materials division. "It remains to be seen to what extent the unexpectedly weak development at MaterialScience will be offset by our improved performance in the Life Sciences," which includes pharmaceuticals and farm chemicals, Dekker said.

Bayer forecasts full-year sales for 2013 to increase 4-5 percent and an increase in earnings before financial items and one-time charges of "a mid-single digit percentage."

The company's earnings a year ago were lower because of money that had to be set aside for settlement costs from lawsuits over birth control pills marketed as Yasmin and YAZ. Bayer faced lawsuits in the United States from women claiming the contraceptive caused blood clots that led to serious health consequences. In this year's quarter, one-time charges dropped to only 109 million euros.

Once one-time charges and financial items such as interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization are set aside, the company's second-quarter earnings rose 1.2 percent to 2.19 billion.

OWINGS MILLS, Md. (AP) ? Joe Flacco understands the lofty expectations that come with a Super Bowl ring and a new $120.1 million contract.

He couldn't care less.

The Baltimore Ravens quarterback scoffed at the idea that he is under pressure to excel this season, now that he's the reigning Super Bowl MVP and owns a six-year contract that, at the time, was the richest in NFL history.

"All we can do is go out there and keep winning, just like we have every year we've been here and not really worry about what people say and what the expectations are," Flacco said Tuesday. "Who really cares?"

After throwing 11 touchdown passes without an interception in a sensational playoff run that ended with a 34-31 win over San Francisco, Flacco no longer has to prove he is one of the league's elite players. He's the only quarterback in NFL history to win a playoff game in each of his first five seasons, and now he's got the fame ? and a paycheck ? worthy of such an accomplishment.

"I can't really complain at this point. We won last year, I have a lot of money ? or I'm going to get a lot of money ? and we're going to win football games. That's the way it is around here," Flacco said a brief training camp practice with rookies and injured veterans. "We're not going to apologize for acting like a good football team. Yeah, our expectations are high, and we don't care if that comes with pressure. We expect to win."

As he prepares to enter his sixth NFL season, Flacco has already won nine playoff games, taken the Ravens to the AFC title game three times and has never missed a start. What else can the guy do?

There is no limit to his potential, according to Ravens coach John Harbaugh.

"He continues to grow," Harbaugh said. "The contract really doesn't have much to do with how hard you work, as long as you continue to work, which he will and has."

Flacco's sheepish grin and will to win hasn't changed since he arrived as a first-round pick out of Delaware in 2008. Now, however, he exudes the confidence of a champion. Continued...

And with linebacker Ray Lewis retired, Flacco will be asked to do more than merely guide the offense. At times, he will be required to be the voice of the team ? in and out of the locker room.

It's nothing he hasn't done before.

"I'm always a leader. I'm not going to really change my role," he said. "We don't have Ray Lewis here anymore, if that's what you're asking. Me and him are probably different in terms of how we lead anyway. I'm not going to change what I do at all because I make more money. That has nothing to do with leading a football team.

"I'm going to go out there and play well and lead by example and I'm going to have fun with my guys. I'm going to get them to trust me and we're going to be a good football team because of it."

During a whirlwind offseason that began immediately after the Super Bowl, the Ravens retooled much of their defense, traded standout wide receiver Anquan Boldin, dumped fullback Vonta Leach and lost center Matt Birk to retirement.

But general manager Ozzie Newsome made signing Flacco a priority, and now Harbaugh has his quarterback in place for another six years.

"It's a great thing to have your quarterback. It's very important, it's a big advantage," the coach said. "Every team in the league is chasing that."

Better still, Harbaugh knows he can count of the durable Flacco to be ready for every start. From his first game as a rookie through his first Super Bowl experience, Flacco has taken the first snap of every game and stuck around until his services were no longer required.

"I don't think it's the end all be all, but I'm definitely proud to say that I can be there for my team every Sunday," Flacco said. "It's not about being hurt, not being hurt. As a player and as a quarterback, there really is only one of you every Sunday and you just take pride in the fact that you can show up for your teammates every week. I think that definitely helps out a lot in terms of being a leader on the team. All of the guys know the fact that you're going to be out there for them."

On a summer Friday, Zane Williams and a group of friends hit a glitch as they tried to make a computer sing ? it wouldn?t play flats.

Once the teens realized their program could only read sharps, they tweaked the sheet music it was scanning. Their speaker blipped out a short melody at a computer coding summer camp at the University of Utah.

Which states want student coders?

States are focused on teaching students how to use computers rather than explaining concepts of computer science that lead to innovation and further study, according to the Association for Computing Machinery and the Computer Science Teachers Association.

As of 2010, 14 states had adopted standards that included significant computer science instruction, the groups said in their report, ?Running On Empty: The Failure to Teach K-12 Computer Science in the Digital Age.?

Nine states counted computer science toward high school math or science graduation requirements, including Oregon, Texas and New York.

The report ranked Utah among the lowest states for teaching concepts recommended by the National Academy of Science and its partners.

Nationally, computer programmers make about $78,000 a year, a 2012 U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics report shows. In Utah, that salary is about $73,000.

Pitching programming

Think of it this way, experts say: using computer programs or apps on devices is an elementary skill, like making small talk. Understanding the logic that goes into computer programming is like learning to read. Students also need to learn to write ? or how to tell computers what to do through programming.

?We teach our kids to read, but not everybody?s going to write a book,? said Lynn Langit, a California programmer who runs the nonprofit Teaching Kids Programming and leads workshops in Utah. Schools should ?teach our kids to program,? she said, ?even though not everybody?s going to be a programmer.?

"I?ve never done anything like this in school," said Williams, a rising sophomore at Brighton High School. "Programming?s becoming a bigger part in jobs and careers. Even if you?re not a programmer, you probably need to know a little bit."

Utah expects far less of its high school graduates ? asking them only to show they have the office skills to create a document, build spreadsheets and organize files.

But the state Board of Education realizes it?s time for an upgrade.

This summer, a task force is debating how fluent Utah students should be in computer science to graduate. Their report is expected this fall.

Today?s jobs demand a higher level of computer literacy, critical educators, executives and parents contend, urging Utah schools to boost students? exposure to coding and programming.

"Just because a student can surf on the Web ? and play on Facebook and play video games ? does not mean they?re computer literate," said Cody Henrichsen, a computer science teacher at Canyons School District.

And such literacy is "not so elective in today?s economy," said Helen Hu, a Westminster College professor of computer science serving on the task force.

One possibility is sprinkling more computer science into core classes, such as math, said Sydnee Dickson, director of teaching and learning for the state Office of Education.

With rapid changes in technology, it?s challenging for schools to write curriculum and train teachers fast enough.

Teaching coding also requires wider Internet access than most Utah schools now have, and more student access to school servers than most districts now grant, said Carl Lyman, a technology education specialist at the state education office.

Utah lawmakers? $10 million push for science, technology, engineering and math, or STEM education, doesn?t immediately include any computer science initiatives, said Jeffrey Nelson, chairman of the Utah STEM center and CEO of Nelson Labs.

But a background in basic coding and robotics is a "big need" in today?s medical jobs, he said. "We?re hungry for people with these skills."

Start young ? Eight-year-old Jake Dawley dragged green ovals and orange circles across a PC screen at the U.?s summer computer and robotics camp. Guided by his programming, a Lego robot spun in circles and could sense when it was coming up against a wall.

"It?s cool," Dawley said, "because it?s interesting that your robot will listen to something you do on the computer."

Advocates say students should learn the ABCs of computer science early ? with puzzles, logic and team problem solving ? because children familiar with technology are more likely to pursue such careers later.

Schools can also break down what experts say are widespread misconceptions: that the discipline is only for nerds, or even just men.

Waiting until high school can be too late, said Microsoft engineers David Jackman and Larry Fluckiger, who teach Advanced Placement and elective classes in the Alpine School District.

Among high school students, "we get this stigma that it?s really hard," Jackman said. The feeling is, "that?s not really my thing. It?s going to be too hard to do."

If Netflix Can Continue To Make Awesome Original Series It Should Be Able To Satisfy Wall Street's Thirst For More Subscribers

Yesterday Netflix's earnings report was directly in line with what analyst projected, but the internet streaming service's stock price still dropped about 7% in after-hours trading.

Analysts and investors are concerned with how Netflix plans to increase its subscriber base.

Netflix CEO Reed Hastings and CFO ?David Wells held a webcast yesterday in lieu of the traditional earnings call. The two explained that the company is investing in original series as a way to boost subscribers.? Netflix calculates the cost of producing a show as an investment instead of an expenditure.

There was a "small but noticeable" member bump from "Arrested Development" but the bump didn't help Netflix reach the 900,000 new subscribers Wall Street was hoping for.? Netflix added 630,000 subscribers in the U.S. during the second quarter bringing the total to 29.81 million U.S. subscribers.?

Morgan Stanley's Scott Devitt and John Egbert believe that Netflix's original series are "yielding tangible benefits to member singups and churn."

While Netflix wouldn't reveal actual viewership numbers for its original series it did note that it has renewed all of its series for a second season. Hastings emphasized the importance of the company renewing its original series as, "a very positive sign".?

Netflix also pointed out that it will produce original documentaries and stand-up comedy specials as a way to attract new members.

The company's newest series, "Orange Is The New Black" is doing better than Emmy-nominated, "House of Cards" and all other shows the company has released.

Each original series is doing better than the last which you could argue is a good thing. As long as Netflix can continue to demonstrate to investors and Wall Street that it is scaling quickly and effectively it will continue to perform well.

MOSCOW (AP) ? In the minutes after opposition leader Alexei Navalny was sentenced to prison, the Russian stock market took a dive. When a court released him a day later, share prices dropped markedly again.

Russia's legal system is awash in the uncertainty that makes markets nervous. The courts appear open to political manipulation and the laws sometimes resemble legalistic head-fakes ? nominally enacted for enlightened reasons, but in practice applied to silencing dissent and inconvenient voices.

The merits of the embezzlement case against the energetic anti-corruption blogger and charismatic opposition figure were widely questioned and his conviction on Thursday was quickly criticized in the West as a political put-up job. Ironically, it was his release that seemed to be the clearest evidence of a political agenda.

The release was justified by the court on the grounds that keeping Navalny behind bars would deprive him of the right to pursue his campaign for this fall's Moscow mayoral election. By giving him at least temporary freedom Russia could bolster its claim that it does actually seek pluralism and full democracy, despite allegations that it's deliberately moving to authoritarianism.

Russian lawyers were suspicious, saying the release of Navalny on these grounds ? and at the request of prosecutors ? was unprecedented. Pavel Chikov, a lawyer who's a member of the presidential human rights council, went so far as to call it "nonsense."

"Most probably, this decision was dictated by political motives," he told the state news agency RIA Novosti.

PUSSY RIOT

Russia has laws promoting religious tolerance. Members of the country's most politically vehement punk band ended up in prison because of one.

Just before the 2012 election that returned Vladimir Putin to the Kremlin, the band barged into Moscow's main Orthodox cathedral to screech out a "punk prayer" against him.

The Russian Orthodox Church is so closely tied to the government that offending believers in essence becomes a political act. So the conviction of three band members on charges of hooliganism motivated by religious hatred superficially defended the sensitivities of the devout, but had a strong political taint. They were sentenced to two years in prison, though one has been released on parole.

GAY PRIDE

Homosexuality was decriminalized in Russia in 1993, but gay activists' annual requests to hold marches routinely are banned on the grounds of public security. The argument is that animosity toward gays, especially among conservative Orthodox groups, remains so strong that any such march would provoke a violent reaction. When unauthorized march attempts take place, thugs do indeed start throwing punches within moments ? but police appear more concerned about arresting the activists than holding back the attackers.

That may change, and not in gays' favor. The lower house of the national parliament has passed a measure calling for banning gay pride rallies outright.

ADOPTIONS

In banning the adoption of Russian children by Americans last year, Russian lawmakers claimed they were protecting beloved tykes from abuse and death at the hands of adoptive parents whom U.S. authorities are too apathetic or disorganized to bring to justice. But the warmhearted concern came amid cold political fury.

The ban was part of a measure rushed through parliament in retaliation for a U.S. law allowing sanctions on Russians identified as human rights violators. Distress about the adoption ban overshadowed the more overtly political provisions of the Russian law, which also calls for the closure of non-governmental organizations receiving American funding, if their activities are classified as political.

WWII

It was seven decades ago that Nazi Germany fell to an offensive driven largely by the Red Army, but the war is still alive in Russia's official culture. Massive annual commemorations of the victory ? and periodic equally elaborate observances of major battles such as Stalingrad ? allow Russians to bathe in the pride of a great and grueling achievement.

Awkwardly, though, the commander-in-chief was one of history's most despised dictators, Josef Stalin. In the Putin years, Russia has significantly blurred that distinction to the point that referring to the Soviet army's brutality and its seizure of the Baltic states is seen as an insult to the modern state.

A bill making its way through parliament would criminalize criticism of Soviet actions during the war. In theory, that would defend the honor of those who sacrificed and suffered. In practice, it could protect those who rule in the present.

U.N. chief praises Panama on North Korea, urges swift U.N. action

UNITED NATIONS (Reuters) - U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon praised Panama on Wednesday for seizing a North Korean ship carrying arms from Cuba, adding that the U.N. sanctions committee would take up the issue promptly.

"The Secretary-General commends the action taken by Panama in full conformity with its obligations under the relevant Security Council resolutions," Ban's press office said in a statement.

It added that Ban, a former South Korean foreign minister, "notes that it is the duty of all member states to implement Security Council decisions.

"The Secretary-General awaits the outcome of the investigation into the matter in question and is sure the (North Korea) Security Council Sanctions Committee will promptly address it," the statement said.

North Korea is under U.N. sanctions for its repeated nuclear and ballistic missile tests.

Ban's unusual praise for a country complying with U.N. sanctions came after Panama called on the Security Council to investigate the ship and its cargo.

Earlier on Wednesday Britain's U.N. Ambassador Mark Lyall Grant said missile equipment hidden in a shipment of brown sugar from Cuba appears to have violated a U.N. arms embargo on Pyongyang.

The ship was stopped last week as it headed into the Panama Canal and Panamanian authorities arrested the crew on Monday after finding undeclared missile-shaped objects and weaponry.

Cuba said the weapons were being sent back to North Korea for repair and included two anti-aircraft missile batteries, nine disassembled rockets, two MiG-21 fighter jets, and 15 MiG-21 engines, all Soviet-era military weaponry built in the middle of the last century.

The U.N. arms embargo on North Korea covers all exports by Pyongyang and most imports, with the exception of small arms and light weapons and related materiel. But to export small arms to Pyongyang, states must notify the U.N. North Korean sanctions committee in advance.

Service and maintenance of weapons by North Korea are also banned under the U.N. sanctions regime.

Apple hires fresh talent for ?iWatch?

Apple has embarked on a hiring spree to tackle design problems with its "iWatch" wrist computer, bringing in fresh expertise amid concern that the launch of its first new product since the death of Steve Jobs could be at least a year away.

The company has begun hiring "aggressively" for the project in recent weeks, say people familiar with Apple's plans for the wearable device, a move that shows it has stepped up development but which raises questions over the ability of its own engineers to develop wearable technology.

As Apple moves from iPods, iPhones and iPads into an entirely new category of product, it is looking beyond its existing staff in Cupertino for the talent required to build it ? an indication that the endeavor involves "hard engineering problems that they've not been able to solve", according to one source.
